OWA, Multiple Servers (non DAG) and logging in.

I've inherited a slight mess and need some help in understanding a few things.
This issue is one of them. Can anyone please share their thoughts?

setup:
server1.domain.com  (with user1@domain.com)
server2.domain.com  (with user2@domain.com)

alias: mail.domain.com (points to server1.domain.com).

Using web browser go to mail.domain.com
user1.domain.com signs in and OWA opens on server1.domain.com server.
user2.domain.com sign in and OWA opens on server2.domain.com server.

How does OWA/Exchange know how to redirect to the correct server?
Where is it set in EAC? IIS seems to be part of it all, but I just can't make heads or tails of it yet.

Please, anyone who care share your thoughts will be most welcomed.

Brett
